Authentic Veal Dishes To Try At An Italian Restaurant

Posted on: 22 June 2022

Veal is quite common in Italian cuisine. Since it is not a meat enjoyed as often in other cuisines, it is a good and unique thing to order when you go to an Italian restaurant. But what veal dishes, in particular, should you look for? Here are a few authentic ones to keep your eyes out for.

Veal Saltimbocca

Veal saltimbocca is a dish made with veal wrapped around prosciutto and sage leaves. It's a flavorful, fragrant dish with many textures woven throughout. The veal is soft and tender, the prosciutto crispy, and the sage green and herbaceous. Usually, the rolls of veal are pretty small, so you might be served two or three of them in an order. You'll often see the dish served alongside broccolini or broccoli rabe. However, it can also be served alongside a light pasta and with a salad.

Veal Marsala

Veal marsala is quite similar to the better-known chicken marsala. It consists of veal cooked in a sweet, fortified wine with mushrooms, onions, and shallots. Some versions of the recipe also call for some heavy cream to be added towards the end of cooking, which makes the dish creamier and silky. Veal marsala is indulgent but delicious. You'll often see it served with a side of risotto and perhaps some roasted vegetables.

Veal Lamponi

If you're in the mood for something truly unique, then look for veal lamponi on the menu. This dish is made with thin, tender veal cutlets cooked in a sauce of raspberries and wine. The sauce is sweet but in a way that complements the meat. This is a dish that really showcases the versatility of the veal and the incredible versatility of Italian cuisine. If you thought Italian cooking was all about red sauce, this dish is one that proves it is not. Veal lamponi is often served with rice and roasted vegetables.

Veal Piccata

Veal piccata is a lovely dish if you're in the mood for something lighter. The veal is pounded flat, dredged in flour, and then cooked in a skillet with lemon, wine, and capers. The resulting sauce is silky with a luxurious mouthfeel, but it does not contain any cream or cheese. This light dish is sometimes even served for lunch.

If you visit an Italian restaurant, keep your eyes peeled for one or more of these veal dishes. Each one has something unique and different to offer. Enjoy!
