Strange—But Delicious—Burger Toppings

Posted on: 3 April 2015

Ask most people to name burger toppings, and they'll typically come up with a list of ingredients that includes lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, and maybe bacon. If you're sticking to these standard toppings, you're really missing out. There are so many other burger toppings out there to enjoy. They might sound strange at first, but these unique burger toppings create a mouthwatering culinary masterpiece. Whether you try them at your favorite restaurant or at home in your kitchen, you'll experience a whole new level of burger.

Peanut Butter

Forget about the jelly. This American favorite is the perfect pairing for beef. Its salty-sweet flavor really brings out the subtle flavors in a burger patty, and its creamy texture is equally as appealing. If you make a peanut butter burger at home, try adding some bacon to really take the flavor up a notch. Creamy peanut butter works best, but there's no reason not to try crunchy if it's all you have on hand.

Pineapple

Fruit on a burger? It sounds strange until you remember that pineapple is a common ingredient in Asian stir fries, which sometimes contain beef. Order your burger with a grilled ring of pineapple on top. Your server may give you a strange look, but you can bet he or she will give the dish a try, too, once you're seen enjoying it. If you make a pineapple burger at home, use fresh pineapple for the most intense flavor. Try dashing a little soy sauce on your burger for an even more Asian-inspired twist.

Cranberry Relish

Cranberry relish is delicious on beef, but if you're feeling nervous, you can first try it on a turkey burger for a flavor that reminds you of Thanksgiving. You might have a hard time ordering this one at a restaurant, unless you happen to be eating out in November. Luckily, canned cranberry relish is easy to spread on top of a burger at home. If you're feeling especially gourmet, you can make your own cranberry relish. The process is not hard, but it does take a few hours since you have to cook down the cranberries.

The next time you're out at a grill, like Mugshots Burger N' Brew, steer clear of lettuce and tomatoes, and opt instead for something more creative. Your friends and family members might give you weird looks at first, but when the see how much you're enjoying your burger, they'll want one too.
